Emily Wood
Software Engineer
I’m not your traditional engineer. I love the people side of the job just as much as losing days in the code. I champion inclusive, collaborative teams, and build software that has real impact on those who use it.
chapter 01
About
I’d love to say I grew up rewriting backends in my teenage bedroom, or that I spent my youth building websites for fun. In reality, my first exposure to coding came much later- after school, after two degrees, and via a library card and a copy of Python for Dummies (I wish that was a joke).
I came to software engineering after losing my job during the pandemic. Before that, my squiggly career lived up to its name. I did everything from teaching ESL in Asia, to working as a receptionist for a non-profit, and eventually moving into film and TV production which felt like I'd found THE THING for me...until the Pandemic hit and that all came to a grinding halt.
I may have come to tech later than most, but I've made up for it since! In the last 5 years I’ve worked on modernising legacy systems in telecoms, building graphics through code for live TV, and developing SaaS platforms and internal tools in advertising.
What ties all of that together, though, is that I like solving messy problems, working with people, and operating in environments where things move quickly and communication is understood to be AS important as the code!

Community impact
Engineering opened so many doors for me, so now I try to hold them open for others.
Through Code First Girls, I’ve helped 500+ women take their next step into tech, across teaching, coaching, and programme support.
I've given talks to students across the country encouraging them (especially the girls) to consider computer science as a GCSE and career option!

Why bombing a live coding interview made me a better programmer
An article I wrote for Code Like a Girl about how I turned the experience of a pretty disastrous technical interview into a learning experience, and encouraging others to be kind to themselves when they don't nail a technical interview every time.

The Human Side of Tech: Why Empathy matters in Software Engineering
In this article, I express my frustration with the way that the multi-round Software Engineering interview process seems to focus so heavily on being able to reproduce specific LeetCode problem solutions and less on the communication, empathy, and collaboration skills that are essential for a successful career in software engineering.
